How Does the ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon Work?
The comprehensive ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System begins with the placement of the ORBERA™ balloon. During a simple procedure performed under the effects of a mild sedative, Dr. Joseph Naim will place the thin and deflated ORBERA™ balloon into the stomach. It is then filled with saline until it reaches a predetermined volume to fill a space roughly the size of a grapefruit. The inflated balloon, which remains in place no longer than six months, reinforces portion control and improved dietary habits.
While undergoing treatment with the balloon, and after it is removed, you will take part in the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System 12-month coaching program. During this time, you will consult with a team of physicians, nutritionists, and physiologists. With the aid of a customized treatment plan, these experts will help you tailor and refine your eating and exercise regimen.
Who is Considered a Good Candidate?
Patients with a body mass index between 30 and 40 are typically considered good candidates for the ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon. In order to be approved, you must have exhausted more conservative methods for weight reduction. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding are not considered good candidates for the procedure. In addition, those who have undergone previous gastric surgery, or suffer from inflammatory or other congenital issues of the gastrointestinal tract, may be disqualified from treatment.
The ORBERA™ treatment program helped patients lose 3.1 times more weight in six months than those who only made diet and exercise modifications.
Treatment Benefits and Risks
The ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon requires no incision, so unlike gastric surgery, it results in no scarring. The procedure can be performed in under half an hour, and most patients can return home the same day. Risks are similar to other endoscopic procedures and include possible infection and bleeding. Once the balloon is placed, complications may include nausea or vomiting, acid reflux, and stomach discomfort. Some patients may experience little weight loss or no improvement in their condition.
Why Choose the ORBERA™ Intragastric Balloon?
Research has shown that the ORBERA™ treatment program helped patients lose 3.1 times more weight in six months than those who only made diet and exercise modifications. This group of patients also demonstrated more significant weight loss through month 12.
The makers of ORBERA™ are backed by over 20 years of global experience designing solutions that promote sustainable, healthy weight loss. In fact, ORBERA™ is the number one global market leader for gastric balloons. The procedure has been performed over 220,000 times in over 80 countries.
