The Gastric Bypass Procedure
Gastric bypass can be performed as an open surgery, but Dr. Naim prefers to perform all procedures laparoscopically. This mean that the surgery will be performed through a few small incisions using specially designed surgical instruments. The technique results in a faster procedure with a shorter, more comfortable recovery.
To begin the surgery, Dr. Naim will reduce the size of the stomach by separating it into two pouches. He will then connect the upper portion of the stomach to the intestine. This procedure works by being restrictive, meaning it reduces the amount of food that your stomach can accommodate at one time, and by being malabsorptive. By changing the anatomy of your digestive tract, your body will absorb fewer calories.
Benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery
Significant Weight Loss
By combining both the restrictive and malabsorptive effects of this procedure, patients can lose weight as long as they can commit to significant lifestyle changes. With healthy modifications to your diet and increased activity levels, you can realistically expect to lose 10-20 pounds per month for the year after your surgery. The average gastric bypass surgery patient will lose approximately half of their body weight in the two years after their procedure.
Improved Health
In addition to experiencing massive weight loss, gastric bypass can improve your overall health. Patients may see a significant improvement in obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, elevated blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and heart disease.
Shorter Recovery and Less Scarring
By performing gastric bypass laparoscopically, Dr. Naim is able to provide our patients with even more advantages. Minimally invasive procedures are just as effective as open or traditional techniques, but carry a much lower risk of complications. Because the entire procedure is performed through a few small incisions, patients are able to recover faster and get back to their normal daily routines.
